Travel requirement: Up to 20%

Working Hours: 40 hours per week and as required


Role Description

The GIS Specialist will be responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining geographic information systems, spatial databases, and associated applications. He/she will use specialized software and data to create maps, perform spatial analysis, and provide valuable insights to support various projects and initiatives.


Job Responsibilities

Data Collection and Management

  1. Collect, compile, and manage geographic data from various sources, including satellite imagery, surveys, and public databases
  2. Organize and maintain GIS databases, ensuring data accuracy and integrity

Data Analysis

  1. Analyze geographic data using GIS software to identify patterns, trends, and relationships
  2. Perform spatial analysis, such as buffering, overlay analysis, and spatial modeling, to solve complex problems

Map Creation

  1. Create and design maps, charts, and visualizations to communicate spatial data effectively
  2. Develop custom cartographic products for reports, presentations, and decision support

GIS Software and Tools

  1. Utilize GIS software (e.g., ArcGIS, QGIS) and other relevant tools to perform data manipulation and analysis
  2. Stay updated on the latest GIS technologies and tools

Spatial Database Queries

  1. Write and execute spatial database queries to extract specific geographic information for analysis

Documentation

  1. Document GIS processes, workflows, and methodologies for future reference and training purposes

Collaboration

  1. Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including program managers, supervisors, and other specialists, to integrate GIS data into project planning and decision-making

Quality Control

  1. Ensure the quality and accuracy of GIS data, maps, and analyses through validation and verification processes

Training and Support

  1. Provide training and support to end-users on GIS tools and applications


Required Qualifications and Competencies

  1. Bachelor's degree in Geography, Computer Science, Data analysis, Geographical Information Systems, Environmental Science, or a related field. Master's degree is a plus.
  2. 5 years of experience working as a GIS Specialist or in a related role.
  3. Proficiency in GIS software (e.g., ArcGIS, QGIS) and spatial analysis techniques.
  4. Strong knowledge of cartography, data modeling, and geodatabase design.
  5. Familiarity with GPS technology and data collection methods.
  6. Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
  7. Excellent communication and data presentation skills.
  8. Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  9. Knowledge of scripting languages (e.g., Python) for automation is a plus.
